One supplier answered in minutes and felt easy to work with. Another was slower, a little stiff, and sent a sample that matched the spec. I have watched people pick the easy chat and then spend months asking that factory to become the sample they did not make. The chat was never the product.
You are not choosing yet if one of these is missing
- You know they make the product, not only sell it.
- The quote table is filled in against the same spec.
- You have scored a sample in your hands, not in a photo.
If one is missing, you are still collecting. That is allowed. Calling it a decision is how deposits get sent early. Three makers is a good short list. More than that usually means the spec was fuzzy, so everyone still looks possible.
Score the same things, in sentences
I do not use a fake-precision score. A sentence per check is enough, as long as every maker gets every check. The point is to stop your memory from promoting the person you enjoyed talking to.
Sample versus the spec
- Maker A
- Passed
- Maker B
- Material was thin
Quote is complete
- Maker A
- Yes
- Maker B
- Who owns the mold is unclear
Fits the cost sheet
- Maker A
- Yes
- Maker B
- Only if freight is perfect
Answers name a process
- Maker A
- Yes
- Maker B
- Mostly “no problem”
They can make your first quantity
- Maker A
- On their line
- Maker B
- They hinted at a partner
Choice
- Maker A
- First order
- Maker B
- Hold
| Check | Maker A | Maker B |
|---|---|---|

Example only. Your numbers will be different.
Believe the object
A responsive salesperson is pleasant. They are not the mold. If the best conversation produced the worst sample, believe the sample. When two samples are close, I pick the quote with fewer silent changes, and the person who can explain a defect without disappearing for a week.
Friendly is not a manufacturing process. Repeatability is.
Write an order small enough to survive being wrong
Choosing a maker includes choosing the size of the mistake you can afford. A huge first order because the unit price drops is a different decision. Run that bigger quantity through the cost sheet again, including storage and the months before Amazon can receive it.
I send one message that states the spec version, the sample I approved, the price, the quantity, the lead time, and how we pay. I ask them to confirm that message, not a new slide. I keep the notes on the makers I did not pick. If the chosen line misses, I do not want to start the search from zero while cartons are late.
This is the same path we run in the Amazon Selling System. You approve the product, the factory, and the launch. We do the work.
